光明寺是鎌倉的大廟之一，由北条經時創建，並成為關東淨土宗念佛道場的中心。這裡的山門是鎌倉寺院中最大的一座。境內廣闊，大殿（本堂）也是鎌倉最大的木造古式建築（國家重要文化財）。本堂北側有一座以荷花池為中心的記主庭園，南側則有石庭。登上後山可以由樹林間眺望材木座海岸與稻村崎方向的景色，並可以遠眺富士山。
