鎌倉国宝館於1928年開館。基於1923年關東大地震中失去地區文化財產的經驗，該館肩負著保護珍貴文化遺產免受災害影響的責任。來自鎌倉市域內寺廟的眾多寶物被寄託於此。
自中世以來保留的珍貴寶物，包括國寶和重要文化財等，均在此保管和展示。
