Eisai was a very prominent Buddhist monk who twice visited Song Dynasty China. He is famous for introducing tea to Japan. Since he preached Zen Buddhism, Eisai faced violent opposition from the powerful Tendaishu sect at Enryakuji Temple on Mt. Hiei in Kyoto. At age 59, Eisai left Kyoto for Kamakura and was welcomed by Minamoto no Yoriie, Hojo Masako and Minamoto no Sanetomo. The stone approach continues from the sammon gate to the chumon gate. Visitors are allowed to enter as far as the chumon gate.
