Mt. Genji stretches out behind Eishoji and Jufukuji temples. Its alternative names “Genjiyama” (“Genji mountain”) and “Shirohatayama” (“white flag mountain”) are said to originate from a legend concerning samurai Minamoto no Yoshiie (1039–1106), who, on his way to Ou (present-day Tohoku) during the Later Three Years’ War (1083–1087), supposedly placed a white flag on this mountain peak to pray for victory in battle. It is also believed that the name Genjiyama is connected to the fact that the Genji (or Minamoto) family residence was located near Jufukuji Temple.
These days, the area is loved by many as a nature park with splendid cherry blossoms and autumn foliage. It is also popular as a spot for al fresco dining for those on field trips or other outings. In the central square stands a two-meter-tall statue of a young Minamoto no Yoritomo (1147–1199) from around 1180.
