Smoking area:THE TABACCO KAMAKURA
Around Kamakura Station, where cigarette butt littering and smoking on the street are serious problems, there is a new style of smoking area that aims to allow non-smokers and smokers to coexist comfortably. As the number of places where smoking is permitted is restricted, the aim is to reduce etiquette violations such as smoking on the street and littering by providing a place that smokers will actively want to stop by. It is a clean and comfortable space, so please feel free to use it.

Initiatives to prevent smoking on the street
In Kamakura City, cigarette butts are particularly noticeable among litter, and various problems have been pointed out regarding smoking while walking, such as burns caused by smoking while walking. In response to this, the city has been deploying street smoking prevention instructors since 2005, and in April 2009, it enacted an ordinance to prevent smoking on the streets.
Outline of the ordinance
- Please make an effort not to smoke on the street in outdoor public places such as city roads, parks, and squares.
- Particularly busy areas will be designated as smoking-free zones, and smoking on the street will be prohibited in those areas.
- If someone smokes on the street in a prohibited zone, a street smoking prevention instructor will verbally instruct them to stop.
- If they do not comply with the above and do not stop smoking on the street, an instructor will order them to stop.
- If they further do not comply with the order and do not stop smoking on the street, a fine of 2,000 yen will be levied as a penalty.
*Smoking on the street means Smoking in outdoor public places and holding a lit cigarette.
